Bali Lurus
19th. Cent. A.D.
Kris Gold, Wood, Ruby, Diamond, Sapphire & other Precious Gemstones, Iron
Length: 69.5 Width: 20 Depth:5
Blade: 41.5
with Handle: 54
This Balinese Royal kris features a gold handle with a rare image of male raksasa demon with a very unusual spiky hairdo and horns. The bulging eyes, wide open mouth, seemingly laughing haughtily at his enemies, is very expressive. The handle is richly encrusted with Burmese rubies, blue sapphires and old cut diamonds. The beautiful golden wood of the wrangka creates a pleasant contrast with the lower sheath which is clad in silver and gold worked with complex ornamental sences and patterns including a scroll lotus flowers and tendrils, a stylized kala head, like those seen over main temple gates, and a one-eyed mask known as bintulu karang. The blade is straight and has a wonderful damascene pattern and a stylized Garuda head. |
